Isla del Sol Bolivia

Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) is an island located in the southern part of Lake Titicaca. It belongs to Bolivia, specifically to the La Paz Department. The island's geography is rugged, characterized by rocky hills and numerous eucalyptus trees. There are no motor vehicles or paved roads on the island. The primary economic activity for the roughly 800 families living on the island is agriculture, supplemented by fishing and tourism. The largest villages on the island are Yumani and Challapampa. The island is home to over 80 ruins, most of which date back to the Inca period around the 15th century AD. Archaeologists have found evidence suggesting that the island was inhabited as early as the third millennium BC. Many of the island's hills feature agricultural terraces, which allow for farming on the steep and rocky terrain. Among the ruins on the island are Titi Qala (Aymara for "mountain cat stone" or "lead stone"), a maze-like structure known as Chinkana, Q'asa Pata, and Pillkukayna. According to Inca religion, the sun god was born on this island.
