The city of Cuenca is the capital of the Azuay Province. It is situated in the highlands of Ecuador at approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. The city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Trust site due to its numerous historical structures. Cuenca is renowned for its breathtaking architecture, tourist sites, accommodations, and nightlife. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Ingapirca The Northernmost significant ruins of the former Inca Empire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ecuador, combining the Inca and Canari cultures. • Baños. A picturesque location just outside of Cuenca to the southwest. It features thermal and Turkish baths. • Turi A fantastic viewpoint situated to the south of the city. It offers spectacular views of the city both during the day and at night. • The New Cathedral. Dominating the main square is the city's primary church, with its 3 stunning sky-blue domes visible from various parts of the city. • Barranco The Tomebamba river flows through the heart of the city, forming a riverwalk area known as Barranco. The riverwalk itself is pleasant, with paved paths on both sides linked by numerous bridges. Stairs ascend the steep banks into the older part of the city on the north side, leading to Calle Larga's restaurants and clubs. Puente Roto, literally 'Broken Bridge' is also situated on the north side and is a popular gathering spot. • El Sagrario. Construction began in 1557. It's no longer functioning as a church, and is currently a museum. • Museo del Banco Central and Pumapungo.
