Stay
About the destination: Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. While many people use Lima as a gateway to Cuzco, Arequipa, or the Amazon, Lima, also known as the City of the Kings, has much to offer visitors. It's a city rich in historical sites, monumental colonial architecture, and old-world charm. The Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas is located in the heart of Lima's Historic Centre and is surrounded by major tourist attractions such as the Cathedral, the Archbishop Palace, and the Government Palace. At the center of the square is a fountain with a bronze statue. Jirón de la Unión, a pedestrian street that links the Plaza de Armas and Plaza San Martín, was once a prominent street where aristocrats resided. Today, it's primarily a shopping street, but as you stroll along, you'll see many beautiful colonial buildings with wooden balconies and ornate grilled windows. Lima is a city closely connected to the ocean. The Costera promenade, which runs along the city's coastline, is filled with numerous restaurants and cafes. Lima is also the best place to sample the diverse Peruvian cuisine, which incorporates a wide range of ingredients from the coast, mountains, and Amazon regions. Despite its size and chaos, Lima, with its stunning sights, delicious food, and friendly locals, is definitely worth a visit.

2. Arequipa
Stay
About the destination: Arequipa is a city in the Southern Coastal region of Peru. Situated in a valley next to the Chili River and encircled by snow-capped peaks like the Misti Volcano, and the Chachani and Pichu Pichu Mountains, it is the second largest city in Peru. Known as "the white city" due to the abundance of buildings constructed from a light-colored volcanic rock called sillar, Arequipa not only shines in its sunny, dry climate but also sits majestically among the spectacular volcanoes that serve as its backdrop. With a collection of beautiful colonial buildings, a delightful tropical main square, and excellent local food specialties, even the most casual visitor can stay occupied for several days. Add to this a sprawling, vibrant convent complex, the archaeological marvel of Juanita, and a bustling local produce market, and it becomes one of Peru's most memorable cities. Lastly, its close proximity to natural wonders like the Colca Canyon and the Valley of Volcanoes quickly makes it one of the must-visit cities in all of South America. Arequipa is and should be a destination in its own right.

The site is perched on a mountain ridge above the Sacred Valley, which is 80 kilometers northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was constructed as a residence for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. Often incorrectly referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is the most recognized symbol of Inca civilization. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Sun Gate.
